ChatGPT is down: Some users are unable to access the AI chatbot on mobile and web

OpenAI’s popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, faced a major outage on Tuesday, stopping many users around the world from using it. The issue started around 2:45 PM IST and quickly became widespread, affecting both web and mobile users.

According to Downdetector, over 800 people in India reported problems. Most of them (88%) had trouble using ChatGPT’s main features, 8% faced issues with the mobile app, and 4% had problems with API connections.

OpenAI responds to major outage

OpenAI confirmed the widespread outage and shared an update around 8:24 PM IST, saying they were working to fix the issue. They mentioned that their API was starting to recover, but it might take a few more hours for all services to be fully back to normal. They also promised to keep users updated as they make progress.

Earlier in the day, OpenAI said that the outage was affecting several of its services, including ChatGPT, its APIs, and Sora (a tool for generating videos). They explained that some users were seeing more errors and delays, and that a full investigation was still underway.

The United States also saw a significant rise in outage reports, with over 1,900 users flagging issues around 07:15 PM IST. Of these, 93 per cent reported problems directly tied to ChatGPT, while seven per cent struggled with the app and one per cent noted login failures.

The outage is not limited to ChatGPT; OpenAI’s API and Sora, its AI video generation platform, are also experiencing elevated error rates and latency issues . Downdetector has logged thousands of complaints from users in India, the United States, and the United Kingdom, highlighting the widespread nature of the disruption .

OpenAI has acknowledged the issue on its status page, describing it as a “partial outage” and stating that they have identified the root cause. However, they caution that full recovery across all services may take time

The timing of the outage has caused significant distress among users, particularly students who rely on ChatGPT for academic support. Many have expressed frustration on social media, with some likening the disruption to losing a trusted digital companion .

OpenAI is actively working to resolve the issue and has committed to providing ongoing updates as they restore full service. Users are advised to monitor the official OpenAI status page for the latest information on the recovery process.
